Holiday Travel Tips From Your Fav Chiropractor!
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, many families are gearing up for long car or plane trips. Whether you're driving to grandma’s house or flying across the country, holiday travel can take a toll on your back, neck, and overall comfort. This month, we’re sharing our top tips to help you stay aligned, comfortable, and pain-free through it all!
Schedule a Pre-Travel Adjustment for the Whole Family! Before hitting the road, make sure your family is ready to travel in comfort. A chiropractic adjustment can help your body better handle the stress of sitting for hours. Call our office today to book an appointment and kickstart your Thanksgiving trip pain-free.
1. Plan Your Posture: Comfort for Your Spine
Sitting in one position for hours can strain your back and neck. Here are some tricks to keep your spine happy on the go:
Sit back, but don’t slouch. Adjust your car seat to a slight recline (not too steep!) and sit with your lower back against the seat. If flying, ask for a pillow to support your lower back.
Engage your core. This one might sound tricky, but simply engaging your core muscles while sitting helps support your back. Even low-key muscle activation can make a difference.
Take breaks to stretch. On road trips, stop every couple of hours to walk around and stretch. On flights, do in-seat stretches or walk the aisle when you can. A quick stretch break can prevent stiff muscles and soreness later.
2. Travel-Friendly Tips for Parents with Kids
Traveling with kids is a whole different ballgame, and keeping them comfortable (and happy) can be challenging! Here’s how to help your little ones stay aligned and content:
Pack a lumbar roll or small pillow. If kids fall asleep in odd positions, these can prevent slouching that could lead to back or neck pain.
Remind them to sit up straight. For older kids, gently remind them to sit back in their seats and avoid leaning forward too much, especially if using screens.
Get them moving during stops. Letting kids out of the car to move and play can help prevent stiffness and let out some energy. Even a quick walk around can help keep their bodies from feeling too stiff.
3. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
Long trips often lead to dehydration because we don’t stop for water as much as we should. Here’s why it matters:
Water keeps your muscles and joints happy. Dehydration can lead to stiff muscles and joint pain, especially in cold weather. Drinking water keeps them lubricated and helps prevent cramping.
Improves circulation. Hydration helps your blood flow smoothly, which is essential when you’re sitting for long periods. Aim for at least 8 ounces of water every couple of hours to stay properly hydrated.
Less snacking, more sipping. Avoid sugary or caffeinated drinks, which can make you crash later. Instead, pack a reusable water bottle to remind yourself to sip throughout the trip.
4. Snack Smart
The right snacks can make a big difference in how you feel when you finally arrive. Avoid foods that are high in sugar or salt, which can cause bloating and fatigue.
Pack healthy, filling snacks. Trail mix, fruit, yogurt, and protein bars are great options to keep you feeling full and energized.
Plan for portion control. Pack your snacks in small, portioned-out bags or containers. This can help avoid overeating out of boredom, which is especially easy on long drives.
5. Entertainment Essentials: Pass the Time Wisely
Staying engaged on long trips can help reduce stress and even help you sit more comfortably. Here’s what we suggest:
Create a playlist or download an audiobook. Listening to your favorite tunes or an interesting story is great for keeping your mind engaged.
Plan fun activities for kids. Bring coloring books, audiobooks, or small games to help them stay entertained. This helps them avoid awkward sitting positions caused by leaning into screens or devices.
Final Thought: Don’t Forget to Check in After Your Trip!
Once you’re back home, a chiropractic adjustment can help undo any lingering tension or stiffness from travel. We’re here to help keep you and your family comfortable this holiday season, so don’t hesitate to schedule a post-trip visit to help realign and restore your spine’s balance.
We hope these tips keep your holiday travels smooth, fun, and pain-free! Enjoy the journey, and safe travels from all of us here at Pomeroy Chiropractic.
