Text Neck Syndrome: Do I have it and how do I fix it??

If you suffer from frequent headaches, numbness in your arms/hands, and neck pain…you may be suffering from text neck syndrome.

Text neck syndrome is caused by persistently poor posture while using mobile devices, and long hours at your computer desk in poor position.

As seen in the graphic above, holding your mobile device with arms relaxed at your sides, pulls the head forward and down putting strain on the muscles throughout the neck and shoulders.

According to explodingtopics.com, people spend more than 3 hours per day on their mobile phones alone, on average. Add to that the amount of time many of us spend at our computers without adequate ergonomics and varying our position from sitting to standing, and we are hitting record numbers of folks experiencing “text neck” in the U.S.!

The amount of force exerted on the neck increases the lower the head drops. The muscles in the neck start to lengthen over time and can cause huge amounts of imbalance.

There is an easy way to alleviate the pressure on the nerves from these poor postures.

When on your mobile device, lift your device to eye height and work to pull your chin in and back just slightly. We have created a video with 3 posture improving tips that demonstrates this chin adjustment and you can find it by CLICKING HERE.

When sitting or standing at your computer for long periods of time, check out this graphic to compare how you sit versus correct posture for sitting and standing.

Poor posture, whether sitting, standing, or using your mobile device, can lengthen muscles to the degree they lose the ability to properly support the spine and head. Too much time spent in these positions can also pull the vertebrae out of alignment causing subluxation and interference with proper nerve function.
